Part 3

College

My mother drove me to school, the first day, which took the added stress of the bus ride out of the equation. One of the things I noticed about my new school was the lack of lockers. That had been something of a letdown. Another difference over my old school was the general layout of the place; it was so spread out. There was no way I’d get fat while attending school there.

I found my first class, with time to spare, and used the extra time to scan through the textbook. English had always been one of my favorite subjects, and having it as my first class of the day would be nice. The class was Composition and Reading, and the teacher was Tracey Delaney. It was a nice enough name but I’d puzzled over whether she was a he or he was a she, ever since my mother had read the name to me. Ambiguous names have always vexed me.

Tracey Delaney’s name may have sounded nice enough, but his voice had a rough quality to it, like he’d spent too many years smoking. As he introduced himself and his expectations to the class, I got the distinct impression he wasn’t a happy man. There was no passion in his voice. I’d had teachers like him before, of course, but this was college. Weren’t the teachers supposed to be of higher quality? I hoped he was the exception and not the rule.

As I walked past his desk, after class, my earlier suspicion that he was a smoker was confirmed; he smelled like an ashtray.

My next class was Algebra. I found the classroom and took a seat in the front row, directly opposite the door. I sat quietly, waiting for class to start and listening to the conversations around me. It caught my attention that the conversation between the guy to my right and his friend, sitting behind him, stopped suddenly. And yet, people were still talking. I smiled. From experience, I knew that a cute girl had just walked in.

A moment later, she touched my arm, her perfume hitting me and making me smile. “Hi, Angela.”

She chuckled. “Hi, Rose.”

I cocked my head, listening, as she took the seat behind me. I turned slightly, when she whispered over my shoulder. “You know, I think this is the first time I’ve ever seen you without Danae.”

I tried to keep a neutral expression, but...

“Uh oh,” she said. “Trouble in paradise?”

I shrugged. “Nah. We still talk, just not very often,” I said, while trying to sound nonchalant. I’m not sure why I lied. It was totally out of character for me.

“Mm.”

The teacher began her introductions, effectively ending the conversation. She introduced herself as Tanya Reynolds, then began calling roll. She had the hint of a British accent and I listened, captivated, as she read off name after name. Following roll, she had us introduce ourselves, then she took the reins back. I had to force myself to pay attention to her words, and I hoped I’d quickly get over how sexy her voice was.
